Pocket-Greenhaven sits about five miles south of downtown Sacramento, bounded by Interstate 5 on the east and a horseshoe bend of the Sacramento River on the other three sides. Portuguese farming families worked this land for generations; in 1958 developers bought more than 700 acres for a planned community called “Greenhaven ’70,” groundbreaking began in 1961, and in 1962 it was named Best Planned Community of the Year by the National Association of Home Builders.

A second building boom in the 1980s and early 1990s added custom homes, gated communities, condominiums, apartments and a second private lake.
